ECONOMIC REHABILITATION IS HUGE TASK
The United Nations General Assembly, in spite of Indian fears and veiled threats from Communist China, decided today to take over the major responsibility for the future of Korea, says Reuter’s United Nations correspondent. The Political - Committee and the General Assembly, acting with unprecedented speed, rushed through the resolution, which will give the new Commission on Korea administrative powers far beyond those given to any other United Nations commission. The commission, working with the United Nations Supreme Military Command, will, in effect, have the final word in three essential matters: — 1. The maintenance ox order and the restoration of stability throughout the country.

This will include the compilation of a reliable voting list, a task which is likely to require several months in view of the immense displacements of population and» the destruction of numerous communities. The United Nations, under the heading of econoimc help, has also assumed an enormous task far beyond the scope of any United Nations action taken anywhere to date. American and other experts are, in fact, determined to make Korea a “ test case of the United Nations aid to underdeveloped territories. Assistance to Korea will include medical relief by the World Health Organisation, food supplies through the Food and Agriculture Organisation, and the restoration of schools and museums through the Education, Scientific and Cultural Organisation. Besides this, the Economic Bureau of the United Nations itself will be put to the test in drafting an overall plan of economic development aimed not only at restoring Korean economy, but also at transforming its economy on modern lines.
2. Represent the United Nations in establishing a unified, independent and democratic Government in Korea, including the holding of elections.
3. The economic rehabilitation of the war-torn land.
