PLANS NOT DROPPED

Nationalisation Of British Sugar Industry

NZPA—Copyright LONDON, Oct. 5. At the British Labour Party Conference at Margate both the Minister, of Health, Mr Aneurin Bevan, and the Lord President of the Council, Mr Herbert Morrison, indicated that plans for more nationalisation had been dropped, but Mr Morrison added: “ The Government still has its eyes on sugar and cement with a view to possible nationalisation. We may be asked whether cement, sugar and industrial insurance have been dropped. The answer is no." Lord Lyle, head of the sugar refiners, Tate and Lyle, said that Mr Morrison had “let the cat out of the bag," by saying that plans to nationalise sugar had not been dropped. “I challenge Mr Morrison to say why he does not think it wise to commit the party to a time table for this wicked step. Can it be he is frightened how the public would, react at the general election if they knew what was in store for them? ” he said.
