FUTURE OF FORMOSA

Discussion By General

Assembly

QUESTION ON AGENDA

NZPA—Copyright Rec. 8 p.m. NEW YORK. Oct. 5. The united Nations Steering Committee today assured a full discussion of the Formosa question in the General Assembly. The discussions will involve the future status of the island, now the last stronghold of the Chinese Nationalists.

The committee by 10 votes to 3 approved the United States proposal to place Formosa on the Assembly’s agenda. Nationalist China, Czechoslovakia and the Soviet Union gave negative votes. . .Dr T. F.. \ Tsiaiig, the Chinese Nationalist delegate, asserted that it was entirely unprecedented in the United Nations for one member Government to call in question the territorial possession of another member Government. He described the step taken by the United States as one of the gravest in the complex problems of international relations.

The Soviet delegate, Mr Jacob Malik, objected to the inclusion of the item on the grounds that it was contrary to the Charter and an insult to the Chinese people. He said Formosa belonged to the Chinese Republic and was not open for discussion.
