Rhodes Scholarship

MR C. L PATTERSON

The sole Rhodes Scholarship nominee of the University of Otago this year is Mr C. I. Patterson. The final selection will be made by the New Zealand Selection Committee later in the year. Mr Patterson was born in 1929 and educated at Reefton, on the West Coast, and St. Andrew’s College, Christchurch. He has been studying law at the Otago University and expects to complete his LL.B. degree this year. He is an outstanding debater and has represented the University in the Joynt Scroll debates every year since 1946. He led the Otago University debating team against the Australians last year. This year he competed in the inter-college law moot which was

conducted as a case on appeal to the Court of Appeal. He acted as senior counsel, in this contest, which was won by Otago. ! ■ , 'Mr Patterson takes a keen interest in international affairs and won the Arnold Atkinson Prize for his essay on the effect of the United Nations on the inter-rela-tionship of peoples of the British Commonwealth. He was at one time editor of the student paper, Critic. When at school, Mr Patterson played football, tennis and cricket. He now interests himself chiefly in fencing and golf.
