MOTHER MARY AGNES

PA AUCKLAND. Oct. 0. The death occurred this morning after a short illness of Mother Mary Agnes (Canty), until recently principal of the Mater Misericordiae Hospital, Auckland Nurses’ Training School. Born at Greta, New South Wales, she came at the age of 16 to enter St. Mary’s Convent, Auckland. After teaching in schools of the Mercy Order in Auckland and Thames, she trained for nursing at St. Vincent’s Hospital, Sydney. Mother Agnes began her association with the Mater Hospital when it bpened in 1900. With Mother Gonzala she left in 1929 to tour hospitals throughout the United States and on her return was instrumental in starting the Nurses’ Training School. She celebrated her golden jubilee as a sister of mercy in April 1948. She is survived by her sister, Mother Magdalen, of Greymouth.
