SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA CONCERT

Dunedin music lovers have come to regard the concerts of the Technical College Symphony Orchestra as important events in their musical calendar. Recent public appearances of these players have reflected a steady growth in performing standards, while the programmes have always been of high musical worth.

For its concert on October 17, the orchestra, under Mr Frank Callaway, has prepared a programme of more than usual musical interest. Mr Francis Bate will be the soloist in Boellmann’s famous “ Symphonic Variations ” for ’cello and orchestra, while Schumann’s “ Concertstuck, Op. 92,” will be played by Mr Gil Dech, pianist, with the orchestra. Continuing its policy of presenting seldom-heard works by some of the minor masters of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, the orchestra will play a suite of pieces by the English composer, John Blow. These pieces are from Blow's •* Venus and Odonis—a Masque for the Entertainment of the King.” Another item from the same period will be John Christian Bach’s “ Sinfonia in B flat.” Further details of this programme are advertised. The box plan opens at Begg's on Wednesday.
