DUNEDIN, OCTOBER 6, 1865.
A meeting of those favourable to the formation of an Agricultural and Pastoral Association was held yesterday afternoon. Mr Driver, who has taken a deep interest in the formation of such a society, was unfortunately unable to attend, and it was therefore decided to postpone the meeting for one week.
A meeting was held at Lawrence on Monday evening, the 29th ult., of those interested in procuring a Wesleyan place of worship in that town, and it was unanimously decided that a Wesleyan Church be established at Lawrence. A strong committee was set up to carry out the wishes of the people, and to ascertain the cost of 'a suitable building. The sum of £25 13s Id was subscribed by those present at the meeting.
The Southland Times of the 29th ult. reports: “From Switzer’s diggings the reports are of an encouraging nature, although the escort, from various causes, is less than usual. Sergeant Baker brought down 60oz of gold yesterday. and states that the quantity would have been much greater but for. the fact of a storekeeper leaving for Dunedin bought up all the gold he could get, with a view to obtaining a higher price than that offering at Invercargill: It would appear that the average yield of gold to the miners now on the field amounts to a money value of about £4 per week per man.”
