CONTEMPORARY ART

Exhibition Opened In Dunedin An exhibition of New Zealand contemporary art was opened yesterday in the Dunedin Public Art Gallery by the president of the Art Gallery Society, Mr A. H. Allen. The exhibition includes the work of some 20 Dominion artists, including Roy J. Dickison, H. V. Miller. Charlton Edgar, and other well-known names. In opening the exhibition, Mr Allen said the purpose of the display was to encourage New Zealand’s own artists and to let the .public know what they were doing. The country was still young, but there was an increasing number of good artists in it. Most of the pictures were landscapes or scenic types, but he was pleased to see increasing attention being paid to portraiture.
