In drizzling rain Conductor won the Metropolitan Handicap by a nose from Indian Chief with Saville Row a neck away third. He was near the leaders most of the war. The favourite, Delta, led early in the race and was in front at the three furlongs, but failed in the heavy going. Saville Row looked the winner when he challenged at the Leger. Tragedy intervened, when Vagabond, rated as one of Australia’s best stayers, broke his off foreleg afffer being in a handy position at the home turn. He was pulled up before the finish and actually limped past the post, but later had to be destroyed. In the George Main Stakes, San Domenico stamped himself as the best sprinter in Australia by defeating the Nizami gelding Grey Boots by a long neck. The Gimcrack Stakes proved a runaway victory for Merrie Merton, a beautiful filly from Speedster Gloriole.
