WORK HAMPERED

Congestion On Wellington

Wharves

LACK OF STORAGE SPACE PA WELLINGTON, Sept. 26. The turn-round of 10 ships has been slowed and several hundred waterside workers were sent home today because there was insufficient space on the Wellington wharves to store the cargo unloaded from ships. Officials of the .Wellington branch of the Waterside Workers’ Union said the work on some of the ships had been brought to a standstill because of shed cognestion, while fewer gangs than could be employed were working the others.

“This morning 140 men were sent home without work at all and will receive only two hours’ attendance money,” said the branch’s walking delegate, Mr J. E. Napier. He claimed that the congestion was not due in any way to the recent waterside strike, as he said that when the strike ended the sheds were less congested than before it started. One cause of of shed congestion, while fewer gangs long delays in the removal of goods once they had been discharged from ships.

“As far as carriers and merchants are concerned, they are just going flat out removing goods from wharf sheds,” said an official of the Wellington Cargo Control Committee today.
