SATISFACTORY FIELDS

Card For Concluding Day At Wingatui

By the Sporting Editor

Although the fields for the Federal Handicap and the Dunedin Guineas fined down to eight runners in each, the card for the concluding day of the Dunedin Jockey Club’s spring meeting on Saturday is a very satisfactory ond, with no fewer than 22 two-year-olds standing their ground in the Juvenile Handicap.

The races selected for the doubles are the Grandstand Handicap and the Federal Handicap, and the fields are:—

ll.frWAKARI HURDLES, Of £350. One mile and three-quarters. st lb st lb

GUINEAS CANDIDATES Sharessa And My Hero In Form TRIALS AT WINGATUI By Springfield A rousing gallop over a mile by the novice candidate, Man o’ Kent and useful sprint efforts by the Dunedin Guineas candidates, Sharessa and My Hero, were the features of a quiet morning at Wingatui yesterday. Most of the horses raced on Saturday were restricted to pace work. The course proper, with the trestles about 45ft out, was on the slow side early after a heavy dew, and it became faster as the morning progressed. , My Hero finished a length in front of Robbie, with about two lengths to Way Home, at the end of six furlongs in lmin 19 3-ssec, the first three in 38 3-ssec and the last half mile In 53 4-ssec. My Hero was travelling well within himself at the post and his effort was •an outsanding one as he galloped on the extreme outside of the track approaching the straight. He is one of the early favourites for the Dunedin Guineas, The John Grigg Stakes winner, Sharessa, went away from the six, and after taking 27 4-ssec for the first two furlongs, she picked up Prince Defaulter. Sharessa completed her task in lmin 19sec, while Prince Defaulter’s half mile required 52 l-ssec. Both horses could have gone much faster and they will strip in great condition for their engagements this week. Asaf Jah and Reformed went away trom the mile and a-quarter post at a strong pace which was increased up the back straight. They came home their last six, with Asaf Jah showing the way, in lmin 21 l-ssec, the last half in 54 l-ssec. Asaf Jah seems to have taken a new lease of life. Great Chase Works Well

The best five furlongs of the morning went to the credit of Great Chase, who finished well clear of Welcome Guest in lmin 6 2-ssec. the first furlong in 12 4-ssec.

Sivite went over the same ground in lmin 7 3-ssec, the last half in 54 3-ssec. He was inclined to loaf approaching the last furlong. Cricket Field went quietly over five furlongs in lmin 9sec. He does not appear to be putting as much dash into his work as he was three weeks ago. Salazar and Sequoia went over five furlongs in lmin 10 l-ssec, the last half in 54 3-ssec. Sequoia should not be long showing useful form. Teviot Night required 28sec for the first two of five furlongs, which she completed in lmin 10 l-ssec. The Paper Slipper filly is a good mover. A Pioneer gelding from H. A. Anderton’s stables and Buttons and Bows were not required to do their best over five furlongs in lmin 12sec, the last half in 55 3-ssec. Helio went over a mile on the sand, and he was speeded up over the last half to record 53 2-ssec. He looks a picture at present and the first time he gets a heavy track he should return a dividend.

Langham, who was galloped on in the Ranfurly Handicap on Saturday, showed that he has recovered well by the manner in which he completed a quiet half-mile 54 3-ssec Red Pickle was shading St. Bruno, who was under a hold, at the end of half a mile in 54 4-ssec, Red Pickle looks in great heart. Hobgoblin was not extended to record 54 2-ssec for his four furlongs after taking 13 l-ssec for the opening furlong. He has taken no harm from nis race on Saturday. t Bob's March was shading Ned Kelly at the end of an easy three furlongs in 39 l-ssec. Bob’s March will not be without prospects in the Dunedin Guineas on Saturday. Kinloch Bridge was let off with three furlongs in 40 2-ssec. the opening furlong in 12 3-ssec. Brilliant Gallop

Man o’ Kent was shading Billy Mac at the end of a. mile on the course proper in lmin 44 3-ssec. Man o' Kent, who is still a novice, was running on well. They went over the first three in 37 l-ssec, the first five in lmin 3 l-ssec and the last half in 54 2-ssec. If Billy Mac could be induced to keqp up with his field in the early part of his races he would soon return a dividend. He looks improved by his recent races. 'Arctotis and Siegform went over four flights of the schooling hurdles. For a big horse, Arctotis is very quick on his feet, and he looks as though he will be useful in this department. Slick bled during the running of the Spring Hurdles at Wingatui on Saturday. He appeared to be all right after pace work yesterday. A number of Riccarton horses have returned home, but that centre will again be strongly represented on the final day of the meeting. Jamell was let off with two rounds on the sand at about half-pace. He had to change his course over the last two furlongs in the Telegraph Handicap on Saturday, and did well to finish third. He has taken no harm from that race and will be hard to beat on Saturday. Concealment, who lost a big stretch of ground -at the start of the Kaikorai Handicap and then finished fourth, looks improved by the run and he should soon make amends for that failure. There are few brighter prospects among hacks at Wingatui than this Booby Trap gelding. Denza, who was prominent for a while in the McLean Stakes, came down the straight with another two-year-old. Both horses were galloping freely at the post. Denza, who is by Sir Galloway from Pianiste, has plenty of ability. If he is favourably drawn in Saturday’s race he may earn some of the stake money.
