HAPPY DISCOVERY
Great Age Of Violin PA AUCKLAND, Sept. 25. Mr H. G. Kendal, of Leigh, has learned that the old fiddle he has been playing since 1918 is a 166-year-old Hungarian violin. He made this discovery when he sent the instrument in to be repaired recently, and the craftsman restored an old inscription on it. This gave the maker’s name as Johance Christianz Hamig, with the date 1784. The name Maerkenkirchen was also inscribed on it, and this is thought to be the town where Hamig worked.
“My old German teacher got me the fiddle after 1918,” Mr W. R. Kendal said. “I have been playing it ever since, and many people commented on its lovely tone. I keep it in a polished rosewood case that looks as old as the violin itself.” Mr Kendal said he had insured the instrument for £2OO. but is now sending to London for an expert valuation.
