New Hospital To Be -Built At Halfway Bush

The new hospital at Halfway Bush as it will appear when completed. This scale model shows the manner in which the hospital has been designed to trap the sun. The four wings on the left point nearly due north and contain bed wards. The two outside wings will be of five storeys instead of four as shown in the model. When completed, the hospital will accommodate 500 patients, a larger number than the present King street hospital. Fouhdations for the administrative block and two of the wings have already been laid. The main entrance is shown in the right foreground. The entrance wing will be of four storeys

over its full length and will contain the X-ray and radio-physiotherapy section of the hospital. The rear middle section will contain operating theatres, and the far wing is for laboratories and stores. Access to the hospital will be gained from both Helensburgh and Taieri roads. A new road from the latter highway will be constructed from a point a little south of the present nurses’ home facing Taieri road. It will lead direct to the entrance of the new hospital as indicated and out on to Helensburgh road. A nurses’ home to accommodate several hundred nurses and other staff will also be erected beyond the site of the main building.
