WOMEN’S HOCKEY
Otago Teams At Naseby
Three representative women’s hockey matches between Otago and Maniototo were played on Saturday at the Naseby .Recreation Ground in perfect weather. The small .crowd of spectators were treated to some fine exhibitions of hockey, the stick-work and passing in the A Grade match being of a particularly high order. In the school girls' match, Maniototo was definitely superior in all departments, eventually winning by five—nil. The outstanding player in the Otago team was Dawn Butterfield at full-back, while Allson Kennedy at centre-forward also played well. For Maniototo, Margaret Davis, left-wing, was outstanding. Goals were scored by M. Davis, G. Inder, S. McSkimming, F Doyle and R. McLean. A Grade Although the Maniototo A Grade teapt met with little success at the New Zealadn Minor Associations’ tournament held at Christchurch recently, it held the Otago A Grade team —a Major Association competitor at the same tournament —to a three—all draw. The match began at a steady pace, and was even throughout. For Otago, Miss Morris scored the first goal, and through the game her stick work was impeccable. The fast, hard-working winger, Miss Brownlee, scored two goals. For Maniototo, Mrs Forman was outstanding, and. F. Provan was a hard worker. The Otago goalie played an excellent game, frequently saving well against the repeated attacks of Maniototo. The Otago fullbacks were always formidable. For Maniototo, J. Gibson, F. Provan and T. Beattie scored one goal each. The games were controlled by Miss Sew Hoy, Mr W. McLeod, Mrs B. Patterson, and Miss H. MacMillan. B Grade The first half of the B Grade match was played at a very fast pace, Otago winning by three goals to one. The Otago forward combination was superior to that of Maniototo, and although Mrs Doyle (Maniototo) saved well and was ably supported by D. Hore, the score mounted. The Maniototo half line played well, Mrs Gilmore doing some fine work. The Otago side had much more finish than the home team, and both sides were tiring when E. Murray scored shortly before time. Maniototo had made frequent incursions to the Otago circle, but was unable to finish off its movements by netting the ball. Scorers for Otago were Misses, Borley, Erridge and Smythe.
