EIGHTY-FIVE YEARS AGO

FROM THE FILES OF THE ©tago TDatl'j? TEfmes DUNEDIN, SEPTEMBER 25, 1865. A report from the Nevis states that at Stewart’s Gully several parties have been doing remarkably well lately, the shareholders in one claim having realised upwards of £3O a man per week. It is reported that 200 oz of gold was purchased by one gold buyer in the township recently.

Our Tokomairiro correspondent writes: “An effort is being made here to get up a joint stock company to erect a distillery, and to carrry on distillation under the' new law. Considering the agricultural capabilities of this district and its central position, I think that if distilling will pay in any part of the province it will do so here; and I think, also, that the experiment is very likely to start”

The usual fortnightly escort arrived in town yesterday afternoon, bringing the following quantities of gold: Queenstown, 10430 z sdwt; Arrow River, 4170 z; Dunstan, 20590 z; Manuherikia, 7380 z sdwt; Dunstan Creek, 4040 z; Hamilton, 15730 z; Waipori, 508 oz; Tuapeka, 12540 z; Waitahuna, 2420 z; Woolshed, lOloz lldwt; total, 83400 z ldwt.

Another fatal accident has happened in the harbour. A few evenings ago Mr Scott, a storekeeper at Portobello, was drowned by the capsizing of a boat near that place. Along with another man, he was sailing from Port Chalmers to Portobello, when the boat was struck by a squall and capsized. Both held on for a considerable time, but Mr Scott was finally washed off and sank. His companion was rescued by a boat which put off from the shore when the capsized boat was observed in its perilous position. Though search has been made, the body has not been recovered. Fourmen have thus been drowned in the harbour within a few weeks, and none of the bodies of the deceased have yet been found.
