DUNEDIN CLUB’S EVENT
The Dunedin Amateur Cycling Club held a 25-mile Massed Start Race from Green Island to Brighton and return on Saturday.* There 'was a small field because several riders have retired until the start of the track season, while others were competing in the 100-mile “ Round the Gorges ” event in Canterbury. Nevertheless the 15 riders who faced the starter provided an interesting race with a fast pace to the turn, where only five remained in the leading bunch after D. Ralston had retired with gear trouble. At the second turn, F. Young his cycle to A. Larkins, whose machine was giving trouble. Larkins was unable to catch the leaders, however, as they were riding well. The two juniors, K. Hastie and R. Lee, showed great form in their best race to date by staying with C. S. Schmelz, the well-known track cyclist, who scored his first win this road season by sprinting well at the finish to beat Hastie and Lee in that order. The time was lhr llmin 33sec. Hastie won the Sealed Handicap from Lee and Schmelz.
