Gay Lyric came with a strong run to take the major honours in the Selma Trot at the Ashburton meeting on Saturday. She gave away 24yds to a big field, and it was a sterling effort, which resulted in her beating Scott Junior, who looked to have the race won inside the last furlong. Gay Lyric, who is trained by G. S. Smith at Addington, is a four-year-old horse by Gamble from Grattan Girl, by Grattan Loyal from Choice, by Logan Pointer from Tit Bits, by Prince Imperial. Choice was also the dam of winners in Free Logan and Donum.

Likely Improver Ferry Walla created a good Impression when he accounted for the Sold in the Wallace Saddle Trot at the Birchwood Hunt Club’s meeting on Saturday. He lost about 48yds at the start, and took the lead after the field had straigh’ened up for the run home. He gave nothing else a chance, and could have won by more than the official margin of three lengths. Ferry Walla is a four-year-old gelding oy Bruce Walla from Hall Note, bv Dillon Hall from Debenture, by Worthy Bond from a mare by Waverley. Ferry Walla’s third dam was Dark Belle, by Adonis from Bay Belle, by King Harold. Hall Note, who was bred by W A. Thomas at Washdyke, Is a full-sister to Grange Lady, a winner last season. Now that he has struck form. Ferry Walla should soon win hts way through the improvers’ classes. Epsom Winner Yankiwi almost completed the double at the Auckland Trotting Club’s meeting on Saturday. He was an easy winner in the Grey Lynn Handicap, the first leg of the double, but he found Lady Joss too much of a handful in the Franklin Stakes, the second leg. Yankiwi won three races on the Auckland winter circuit last season, and he was made a strong favourite for both races on Saturday. He gave Lady Joss 36yds in the Franklin Stakes and got within three lengths of her His time of 3min 15 3-ssec for the mile and a-half was a sterling effort. He has been allowed to drop out of his engagements for the second day at Epsom, and his next appearance will be awaited with interest.
