YOUNG OTAGO BOXER

Success At Dominion Championships BANTAM-WEIGHT TITLE Special to the Dally Times GREYMOUTH, Sept. 20. With a victory each to their credit in previous encounters, W. Leckie (Otago) and C. Shanks (Southland) provided a fitting climax to the amateur boxing championships at Greymouth tonight when they met in the bantam-weight final. Leckie’s victory was popularly received. There was very little between the contestants. Slogging themselves virtually to a standstill' in the final round of the feather-weight final, Pile (Ashburton) and Keane (Hutt Valley) thrilled the record crowd and they were cheered to the echo for the brightest exhibition of the'championships. The unanimous opinion of the judges was for Pile, but both contestants pleased by their display of scientific boxing. F. Wilson (Wairarapa) lost the lightweight final to the rugged Southlander, D. Glozier, on the unanimous verdict of the judges. The decision met with a hostile reception. Glozier, runner-up three times in previous championships, relied on rugged infighting. Coolly biding his time and scoring at intervals with rights and lefts to the face, R. Sadler (Waimate) took the welter-weight title from the versatile Southland fighter, R. Wilson, by a unanimous decision. Wilson rallied splendidly to win the final round, but failed to make up his leeway. Employing splendid left hooks, M. Tuck (Greymouth) had A. H. Whittle . (Auckland) down for the count of eight in the first round of the middleweight final and a similar count early in the second round. The referee stopped the bout and declared Tuck the victor. This gave the West Coast its sole success.

There was little between the light heavy-weights, W. Rice (Hawke’s Bay) and K. Cotter (Auckland), the former gaining a unanimous verdict in a dull bout.

F. David (Wellington), through injury, defaulted in the heavy-weight final to J. Hall (Taranaki). C. Manson (Hamilton) deserved his success over A. Millanta (Wellington) in the fly-weight final, with the judges unanimous. He hit more cleanly, wher.eas Millanta hung on unduly, losing points.
