MAORI LANDS
Development Projects PA WELLINGTON, Sept. 20. “It is estimated that there are 750,000 acres of Maori-owned lands not now in use or fully used that could be farmed successfully, and it is intended to go ahead with the development of these lands as speedily as possible,” states the Minister of Maori Affairs, Mr Corbett; in a foreword to the annual report of the Department of Maori Affairs tabled in the House of Representatives. The Minister added that the title position of the greater part of those lands made it impossible to attract private finance investment, and without Government assistance based on long-term plans, the lands would remain in their undeveloped state. “There is a double purpose behind this development,” states Mr Corbett. “The most important is the establishment of owners on their lands as independent self-supporting occupiers, and the other, a more national outlook, is the continuation of the development of the country’s assets, with its effect on the national economy.
