LINK WITH VICTORIAN ERA

There are few post offices in New Zealand which carry on their administrative plates the legend “VR.” One that does is the Cardrona Post Office, which, from its establishment in the 1870’s, has been in the capable hands of the McDougalls. Mrs J. McDougall, the present postmistress, was paid a visit by a man last year who showed surprise at finding a “Victoria Regina” office in Otago. “I thought my office in the North Island was the sole reminder of the great Queen,” he said. The above photograph shows the Cardrona Post Office and the plate bearing the letters “VR.”
