NEW OFFICER
Dunedin Police Force INSPECTOR W. J. IRWIN PA WELLINGTON, Sept. 19. The promotion of Sub-inspector W. J. Irwin, of Auckland, to inspector at Dunedin is announced by the Minister in Charge of Police, Mr Fortune. He will replace Superintendent A. G. McHugh, who has been appointed to take charge of the Canterbury police district. Inspector Irwin is well known in Dunedin and Invercargill, where he was stationed for some years. He joined the Police Force on June 1, 1920, and after serving in North Island centres was transferred to Lyttelton. For a period he was at Kaitangata and was promoted to the rank of sergeant on January 1, 1937, on being shifted to Dunedin. He was made a senior sergeant on November 1, 1943. ait Invercargill. He was then transferred to Auckland, attaining the rank of sub-inspector on October 1, 1945. Other Promotions Senior Sergeant W. S. Brown, of Auckland, has been promoted to subinspector, and Sergeant H. L. Smith, of Auckland, to senior sergeant? Sergeant E. J. Grove, Hastings, has also been promoted senior sergeant.
