OPENING OF WINGATUI SPRING CARNIVAL
CARD FOR SATURDAY I McLean Stakes Arousing Great Interest PROSPECT OF RECORD FIELD i By the Sporting Editor The Dunedin Jockey Club’s spring meeting will be opened on Saturday and the card, including as it does the first of the new season’s two-year-old classics in the South Island, the McLean Stakes, should attract a large attendance. Wingatui stables shelter what must be a record number of youngsters and the parade at the Otago Hunt Club’s meeting served to show that a majority of them are well forward. Several “ foreign ” youngsters will add to the interest in the race. The field will be one of the best that has ever lined up for the local classic. •The races selected for the doubles are the Telegraph Handicap, which will now be the third race on the card, and the Ranfurly Handicap. The going was in splendid order yesterday and if there is no break in the weather it will be firm and fast on Saturday.
