HEATING EQUIPMENT

Oamarn Public Hospital CHANGE NOT RECOMMENDED Alterations to the present boiler equipment to burn oil instead of coal would cost in the vicinity of £3OOO, not including the cost of installing oil tanks, stated the engineer, Mr A. J. Fraser, in a report to the monthly meeting of the Waitaki Hospital Board yesterday. He did not think the time was opportune to consider the installation of an oil fuel plant, he added. The secretary, Mr W. M. Richardson, said it was generally agreed that oil fuel would cost about 10 per cent, more than coal. In reply to a question as to the cost of heating the hospital, Mr Richardson said that the cost would be hard to calculate. Several years ago he had advocated the installation of steam meters at a cost of £4OO, and without these the cost of heating the hospital could not be gauged. Several factors had to be taken into account, such as steam for sterilising and for the laundry. Mr Richardson said that the hospital’s coal bill last year was £5427. Mr H. C. Jeffery commented that this amount would probably increase this year because of the removal of subsidies and increased cartage costs.
