PUBLIC SPEAKING

Junior Chamber Of Commerce Award

Mr H. S. J. Tilly, of the Dunedin Junior Chamber of Commerce, won the Angus Halligan Cup for public speaking when this annual event was decided last night. Four contestants took part. They had to deliver a prepared speech of 10 minutes’ duration and an impromptu speech lasting for three minutes. The winner’s prepared subject was “ Two Immortal Bards" (Shakespeare and Robert Burns), while in the impromptu division he drew the subject “Abolition of the Upper House.” The judge, Mr A. K. Ibbotson, complimented the contestants on the high standard of their speaking. He said that only one point separated the winner and the runner-up. ✓ The other contestants were Messrs W. F. Thomson (runner-up), J. K. Skinner and R. R. Armstrong. The cup was presented by Mr Halligan,' who is a past president of the junior chamber.
