EMPLOYERS’ APPEALS
The Armed Forces Appeal Board held its first sitting in Dunedin yesterday to hear appeals by employers for postponements of service by men who had volunteered for K Force. Th 6 chairman, Mr G. T. Baylee, said that the board had no power to make decisions on the cases submitted to it for hearing. It acted only in an advisory capacity. It could, however, recommend to the Army Department that the i service of a volunteer for K Force should be postponed for a definite or an indefinite period, and, on the other hand, it could recommend that service should not be postponed. He added that postponements would be granted only in exceptional cirAppeals were made yesterday on behalf of 16 men, whose employers wanted a postponement of army service because of staffing difficulties. No postponement was recommended in three cases, postponement for a definite period was recommended in four cases, and for an indefinite period in eight cases. One appeal was adjourned for two days to allow the volunteer to withdraw his application for service. The other members of the committee are Messrs E. H. Calder and D. T. Vorley. Mr R. J. Pickerill appeared for the Crown. . *
