EARLY PEAK LOAD
Power Consumption APPEAL TO SOUTH ISLAND Special Correspondent • WELLINGTON, July 24. South Island power consumers are asked by the State Hydro-electric Department to limit their use of power between 8 and 8.30 in the mornings. This period has proved the peak consumption time on the South Island hydro-electric system in recent weeks. The general manager of the department, Mr A. E. Davenport, in a message to power supply authorities today said that while sufficient control was being exercised over the midday and evening peak loads, the morning peaks have been of record size and a record high loading occurred on July 19. “ Supply authorities and consumers alike are asked to limit their loading at this time of day,” his letter states. The generation of units reached a figure of about 19.7 millions, which also constituted a record. Apart from the question of peak loading, the position was satisfactory, provided the excess consumption of units did not continue. Figures quoted by Mr Davenport showed that consumption for the week ended at midnight on July 23 was 4.39 per cent, above the allocation. Storage available was now down to 87,770,000 units.
