BLEAK CONDITIONS
The Canterbury Area PA CHRISTCHURCH, July 16. A fresh south-west wind and frequent showers of rain, hail, and sleet made the week-end in Christchurcn and Canterbury the coldest and most unpleasant of the winter. Air temperatures were low, and snow fell low down on the foothills, but generally did not lie on the plains except in some parts of South Canterbury. The* inland route from Christchurch to Kaikoura- through Waiau is blocked by snow, and the Main North road was under water near Cheviot last night, but is now clear: Apart from these, there have been no interruptions to traffic or communications.
Nearly all sporting fixtures yesterday, including the New Zealand ice skating championships at Lake Ida, were cancelled. The exceptions were the Canterbury-Wellington representative Rugby match and the cross-country running club championships.
