EIGHTY-FIVE YEARS AGO

PROM THE FILES OF THE ®tago Ttimes DUNEDIN. JULY 17, 1865. “ The Provincial Government Gazette of the 12th inst. contains a statement of the revenue and expenditure during the quarter ended June 30. The revenue from all sources totalled £107,867 8s Bd, and the expenditure £103,105 10s lid, leaving a balance in hand of £4762 7s 9d.” “ The usual fortnightly escort arrived in town yesterday afternoon, bringing the following quantities of gold:—Queenstown, 7740 z lOdwt; Arrow River, 2490 z 13dwt; Dunstan, 12780 z lOdwt; Manuherikia, 8950 z lOdwt; Dunstan Creek, 12920 z 13dwt; Hamilton, 8650 z; Hyde. 6480 z 15dwt; Tuapeka, 12920 z 2dwt; Waitahuna, 1019 oz; Woolshed, 54oz;—total, 83780 z lldwt” “The annual ploughing match of the Taieri Agricultural Society took place yesterday in a paddock at East Taieri. The weather was beautiful and several fine useful horses were employed. The following is a list of the principal winning owners:—Thomas Christie, Robert Dowie, James Allen, M. Carmichael, David Warnock, James Aitken, Frederick Walker. William Allan and George Little.” “A return of the Board of Trade brings out painfully the vicissitudes of a sailor’s life, and its publication must, we fear, have a deterring influence on the rising generation. In the 12 years between—lßs2 and 1864, the death of 47,000 seamen is recorded. Of these, nearly 20,000 died from drowning, and more than 2000 from accidents of various kinds. Such, a proportion of casualties attaches to no other calling, and it would appear that our maritime supremacy is purchased at a serious sacrifice of life.”
