PROM THE FILES OF THE ®tago Ttimes DUNEDIN. JULY 17, 1865. “ The Provincial Government Gazette of the 12th inst. contains a statement of the revenue and expenditure during the quarter ended June 30. William Allan and George Little.” “A return of the Board of Trade brings out painfully the vicissitudes of a sailor’s life, and its publication must, we fear, have a deterring influence on the rising generation. In the 12 years between—lßs2 and 1864, the death of 47,000 seamen is recorded. Of these, nearly 20,000 died from drowning, and more than 2000 from accidents of various kinds. Such, a proportion of casualties attaches to no other calling, and it would appear that our maritime supremacy is purchased at a serious sacrifice of life.”
