MEN’S HOCKEY
Handicap Round Starts The first round of the men’s hockey senior handicap competition was played on Saturday. In spite of the heavy rain on Friday night the ground was in better condition than was expected. The Tainui B v. United match counted both for the senior B championship and the handicap competition, Tainui winning the championship game by 3 goals to 1. The Oamaru A-Tainui A game, which was won by Tainui by 3 goals to 2, was a good even one, and could have gone in either team’s favour. On the actual scoring Oamaru won by 2 goals to 1, but failed to catch Tainui with its handicap. For Oamaru, E. Sherwin and Minty scored, while for Tainui, Kilpatrick scored. « Tainui B and United drew 3 goals all. United is a much improved team, but again the experience of the Tainui eleven was a match for the more youthful United team. For Tainui Lowen scored two goals, and Bedford one, while for United, McGregor scored. Rovers A beat Rovers B by 6 goals to nil. Rovers B defended strongly, but the younger players were no match for the A team. Although the B’s carried out one or two raids into the A’s goal area they were*unable to finish off movements. For Rovers, A. McFadzien, White and Oates scored. Results of Junior Grade games were:— St. Patrick’s A 11, St. Patrick’s B nil; St. Kevin’s A 9, St. Kevin’s B ml; United 7. Oamaru 2.
