Successful Meeting At Palmerston The annual meeting of the Otago Hunt Club in Palmerston was held over the week-end. There was a large number of followers, including visitors from Oamaru, Timaru, Milton, Central Otago and Dunedin. Commencing on Friday, afternoon, several runs were held over the properties of Messrs P. Ellis, J. Aspinall, D. Ross and S. Coutts, G. Molyneux and G. Ross. Although there had been a considerable amount of rain, the going was good and the jumping was of a high standard. The country is ideal for " drag ” hunting, and the variety of jumps added to the interest of the runs. In spite of the weather, the spectators turned out in force, some coming from as far as Christchurch for the annual gathering. The last run was held in heavy rain, but proved to be one of the best held in the district. The hounds gave plenty of tongue and set a fast pace throughout. Mrs Gorton was well to the fore and finished close behind the leaders. Those who followed were:—The master, Mr J.- 0. Brunton, on Burnbrae; the deputy master, Mr K. Todd on Narvik, Miss E. on April, Miss E. Horne on Amberley, Messrs S. R. Robb on Phantom Night, R. Aubrey on Granite, J. Coutts on The Rancher, G. Docherty on Kiltie, P. Hudson on Antagonist, F. Gorton on Jacko, G. Lloyd on Silver Fern, G. Valentine on Top Rose, E. Lovett on Geordie, G. Lovett on Petty, J. McCullough on William Tell, G. Trainor on Cavalier, J. Mercer on Golden Jack and Silver Wings, B McNeil on Chum, T. Dagg on Count Roger, R. Hurring on Penny Nap and J. Colins on Kildare Lad.
On Saturday afternoon a gymkhana was held on the Palmerston Show Grounds. The unfavourable weather and state of the track made it Impossible to carry out the full programme, and the jumping events were held under difficult conditions. There was a large number of entries in all the events and competition was keen. The placed horses in the ladies' open event had to jump off for the final result.
The J. P. O’Brien Challenge Cup was won by Mr P. Hudson’s Joe, ridden by Miss D. Grant (Timaru), by a narrow margin from Mr J. S. McKay’s Peter L. The W. Crockett Trophy for the best lady rider In the jumping events was won by Miss D, Grant, and the David Ross Trophy was won by Mrs W. Gorton. The events were run off without delay under the guidance of the president, Mr A. Coutts. Mr D. Ross (Palmerston) acted as judge. The results were as follows: Pony Trot (eight entries).—D. McLeod’s Darky 1, P. Hudson’s Chum 2, G. Lloyd’s Silver Fern 3. ... Ladies’ Jumping Event (nine entries).— Joe (Miss D. Grant) 1, Sally Mine (Mrs W. Gorton) 2, Stately (Miss E. Todd) 3. Open Jump (23 entries).—Joe (Miss D. Grant) 1, Peter L. (J. S. McKay) 2, Granite (R. Aubrey) 3. Rescue Race (16 entries).—K. Russell (Rocket) 1, G. Lovett (Petty) 2. Musical Chairs (26 entries).—B. McNeil on Chum 1. . „ . , Maiden Jump (14 entries).—Stately (J. Coutts) 1, Cavalier (G. Trainor) 2, Amberley (Miss A. Horne) 3. Weather permitting, hunts will be held at North Taieri today, tomorrow and Wednesday at 2 p.m. Owners and trainers wishing to qualify are asked to be present.
