PUNTMAN NEEDED

Only Three Operating In Dominion TUAPEKA COUNTY COUNCIL With the erection of bridges through the years, the need for puntmen has diminished considerably until the present, when only three are employed in New Zealand. Two of these are employed by Otago counties, and the recent resignation of the puntman working for the Tuapeka County Council has left it without anyone to operate its punt. The punt operates across the Clutha River at Tuapeka Mouth, and transports stock, vehicles, and people from one side to the other. It is powered by a motor, and has to cross about 300 yards' of water. The Tuapeka Council has been running the service for a number of years, and it has to be continued because representations to secure a bridge have failed. The council lets a contract for two years.
