NEILL CUP

Badminton

WIN FOR OTAGO TROPHY RETAINED Special to the Daily Times OAMARU, July 16. By beating the Canterbury team by 14 rubbers to 2 at Oamaru on Saturday night the Otago Badminton team retains the Neill Cup, symbol of badminton supremacy in the South Island, wins the South Island Provincial Badminton Championship, and goes oh to play Auckland, the North Island champion team, for the Wisden Cup at Christchurch during September. Mrs M. Potts, formerly Miss Mavis’ Kerr, Otago top ranker, was the only Canterbury player to register wins. Several of the matches were closely contested, five going on to three sets. There was a large gallery of spectators present, and they were treated to badminton. of the highest order. Possibly the best match of the night was the Mixed Doubles, Robson and Miss Lindsay (Otago) v. Pattinson and Mrs Potts (Canterbury). Robson dominated the play and his superior court craft gained for the Otago pair many points. Mrs Lindsay played well at the net and scored with some exacting shots. Both Pattinson and Mrs Potts served too many high serves, allowing the opposition to smash them. Several good rallies were seen. Mrs R. Stark (Otago) played well to take the second set in the Women’s Singles from Mrs M. Potts, who appeared to be out of touch on Saturday night. In the Men’s Singles, J. Robson (Otago) played well against R. Pattinson to run out the winner in two straight sets. Robson dominated the play, and gave a thrilling exhibition of courtcraft. He won points with beautifully placed drop shots. All round, the Otago team was superior to that of Canterbury, with the exception of Mrs Potts, who won her Singles and shared a win in the Doubles.
