RECORDS TOPPLE
British Golf Open BELGIAN'S ASTONISHING ROUND NZPA—Copyright LONDON. July 3. Records toppled fast in' a remarkable day’s golf when the first qualifying round for the British Open golf championship was played at Old Troon and Loch Green courses at Ayrshire today. Flory Van Donck, 38-year-old Belgian professional, turned on an astonishing 65 a new record for the Old Troon course" and equal to Henry Cotton’s 1934 record for the lowest championship round ever achieved in the Open championship. Charlie Ward followed up with inspired golf to establish a championship record for nine holes with a blistering 30 inward half in a 68 for the same ocurse. Meanwhile the Australian, Ossie Pickworth, was playing near perfect golf on the Loch Green course for a 69, which smashed the course record. Bobby Locke then robbed Pickworth of the record with a 68. The Australian, Norman von Nida, and the Argentinian, Antonio Gerda, were close up with solid 70’s. Tragedy befell Germany’s only entrant, Herman Tissies. At the short eighth he slammed the ball from a bunker right across the green to the opposite bunker. Then he repeated the performance, landing back in the first bunker. This went on for some time. He eventually holed out in 15 and put himself well out' of range of qualifying.
