FIFTH WIN ON END

Tantamount Has Become Solid With Racing Tantamount scored his fifth successive win when he accounted for the field in the Karapiro Handicap at Claudelands on Saturday. Although he is not brilliant, Tantamount is a reliable trotter who likes winter conditions and stays well. He is a game fighter in a tight finish. Last season he had 13 starts and the. best he could do was finish third in one of them. He has thrived on racing and in 21 starts he has had five wins, five seconds, four thirds and four fourths. His first win came in the Rahui Handicap at Otaki last month when he led all the way and a few races later he came out to win the President's Handicap. At Thames he accounted for two useful fields in the Introductory and Winter Handicaps. He was eased up for a day or two after these successes and he was paraded in great order on Saturday. He is a six-year-old gelding by the Americanbred trotter Josedale Dictator, who won a number of races in New Zealand when trained by the late F. J. Smith. He is out of an unraced mare in Cayuse by a little-known performer in King Franz, while his second dam is by Van Dillon. Cayuse, Van Dillon, and King Franz are not in the Stud Book. Mr R. T. Hanson, of Palmerston North, bred both Cayuse and Tantamount, who is trained by D. W. Hansen. When he gets conditions to suit him, Tantamount should win in much stronger company than he has beaten in his recent successes. Unlucky There was fairly substantial support for Loylan in the Winchester Trot at Washdyke and the Grattan Loyal gelding was one of the leaders in the home stretch and ‘ looked like a place-getter at least until Dowry broke and interfered with him. Dusolina, the dam of Loylan, is by Drusus from Doraldina, by O.Y.M. from Dollar Princess, by Rothschild Alluck Disappoints Alluck will need to show marked improvement before he becomes a sound investment for the Leeston trainer, W. J. Doyle, who purchased him recently for £7OO and contingencies amounting to £3OO. He finished third in the Wai-iti Trot at Washdyke on Saturday, but he was not impressive. The sloppy conditions, however, may have accounted for his display. The previous week at Ashburton he had conditions to suit, but he was never a possibility.

Consistent Performer Winston Hall has had four starts since he was taken to the North Island by J. B. Pringle, and he. has recorded one win and three placings. His win came in the A. J. Corrigan Handicap, the second leg of Saturday’s double at Claudelands, which he won comfortably by two lengths. Winston Hall has shown marked improvement since being trained by Pringle, and he should continue to pay his way at some of the smaller meetings. He is a useful stayer Should Be Improved \

Piccolo had failed to infuse any dash into his work on the days preceding the opening of the Waikato Trotting Club’s winter meeting and this, no doubt, accounted for him being sixth favourite In the Members’ Handicap, in which he went a solid race for third. He was oacked down to third favourite for the sprint event later in the day, but he did not impress. He should be Improved by his races on Saturday, and he can be expected to show improvement this week, when he will parade in similar events. Sandyetta’s Form

Although she is rising 11 years. Sandyetta continues to pay her way, and she was not disgraced by finishing third to Tantamount and Inherit in the Karapiro Handicap 'at Claudelands on Saturday. There were only six starters in the race and the three place-getters had a great duel over the final mile. Sandyetta did not race until last year, and previously she had foaled Sandyshore, who has shown promising form during the current season. Sandyetta is-by Sandy dale from a mare by Wrack, while her second dam was Seaworthy, by Man o’ V'ar. Seaworthy had a successful stud career and she left winners in Marshal Ney, Acropolis and Heliopolis. Sandyetta has had only four starts, since being taken over by E. E. Cressey, and she has been three times in the minor money. She may come into her own on the final day of the meeting. Bred In Purple Petro Star created a good impression when she accounted for the field in the Winchester Trot at Washdyke on Saturday. She appears to have become more solid in the * last few months, and she should eventually live up to her breeding and take a tight mark. It was her second win for the season, the other being in the New Zealand Oaks at New Brighton, when she led all the way to beat Roschana and Lady Joss. She had shown good form in patches for her Tinwald trainer, B. Grice, who races her in partnershio with Mr R. Miller. Petro Star is a three-year-old ,illy by U Scott irom Single Star, a grand performer by Nelson Derby from Queen’s Treasure, by Rev de Oro from Queen Cole, by King Cole from the imported mare Norice, who founded one o' the best families in the Stud Book. Queen’s Treasure was also the dam of Hardy Oak (3min 10 4-ssec), Jack's Treasure, Mareeta, and Shepherd's Brook.
