A popular story among anti-Social-ists is quoted by the London correspondent of the Daily Times. “ Christopher Columbus was the first Socialist. He set off without knowing where he was going. When he got there he didn’t know where he was. And, anyway, he went at somebody else’s expense.” “ In English, Please ”

Emphasis that New Zealand is a tiny country in a large ocean, as often as not forgotten on Hollywood maps and still unknown to millions, is given in an advertisement inserted in the Dominion newspapers by a New York firm. The company wants a sales representative, but adds in its stipulations, “All correspondence in English, please.” Frigates For NZ

New Zealand’s Beauties

The countryside of New Zealand, of which he had seen- something in the last few days, combined features of the beauties of Wales, Scotland and England, said Lord Macdonald, leader of the United Kingdom delegation to the Sydney conference, at a State luncheon in Auckland on Monday. “If you can combine the beauties of these three countries, and I think you do, then you must have something as near paradise as possible,” he said. Peanuts In Domain

A miniature self-sown and unsuspected groundnut scheme was discovered in the Auckland Domain a few days ago when employees of the City Council’s parks department discovered a couple of sturdy peanut plants, in full bearing, growing on a heap of gravel. The gravel had been left some months previously after a road had been repaired. When the plants were uprooted each was found to have about 25 peanuts on the roots. Labour And Horseshoes

The drift of labour from the high country to the town was referred to by Mr J. C. Sanders at the fifth annual conference of Federated Farmers yesterday. Another matter troubling them was a lack of horseshoes. These were unobtainable, apd on the stony high country horses were essential. A “tip” to letter writers was given by the Minister of Social Welfare, Mrs Ross, at the annual meeting of the Auckland branch of the Society for the Protection of Women and Children. “When people begin a letter with * I’ve worked for the National Party for 10 years,’ they immediately go down 10 per cent, in my estimation,” she’ laughed. “If they say ‘ I’ve always voted Labour, but what can you do for me? ’, I’m inclined to give the matter a little more consideration. I feel like saying to people, ‘Never mind your politics; what are your problems? ’ ”
