OVERSEAS ANIMALS
Stocking New Zealand's Gameless Areas Special Correspondent WELLINGTON, May 31. The Government is “investigating" to see if there are animals in other natrs of the world suitable to stock the gameless areas of New Zealand. When asked at the annual meeting of thp Wellington Acclimatisation Society yesterday if the Government would consider introducing snipe to improve New Zealand’s feathered game, the Controller of Wild Life, Mr G. R. Yerex, said that it would have to be decided whether it would become noxious. Mr Yerex said that there had been some unfortunate examples in the past when Canadian wild geese were imported, and before that the rabbit. The chukor had been introduced the hard way, he said, and might now be a menace. Mr K. Allen, of the Marine Department, said that foreign fish could also be prospective pests as trout and whitebait. Of the 30 fresh water fish introduced to New Zealand in the past, only three had proved their worth.
