TYPE CRITICISED
Dunedin Telephone Directory COUNCIL OF WOMEN Dissatisfaction with the type and the inferior quality of paper used in the Dunedin Telephone Directory was expressed at the meeting of the Dunedin branch of the National Council of Women, in the Pioneer Women’s Hall last night. Mrs R. A. Ewing, who reported on an interview with the chief postmaster, Mr M. R. Aldridge, said that the type had been agreed upon by an international association of printers as being the most suitable for such publications. National Council members, however, considered it difficult to read. It was decided to write to Wellington to ask that better type and paper should be used for the new directory. On the motion of Mrs O. Jennings a remit, “that the Minister of Transport. Mr Goosman. should be requested to place receptacles for travel-sick passengers, similar to those provided on planes, on Railway buses,” was carried.
Miss V. Hayward proposed that ■ a remit should be forwarded to the Dominion conference in order to find out the usual procedure adopted in all New Zealand juvenile courts concerning the restitution of stolen property. In Dunedin, she said, it was customary for the magistrate to order restitution either by the children themselves or by their parents, but this procedure' seemed to depend on the magistrate concerned. “ Many parents are irresponsible where their children are concerned.” Miss Hayward said. “If financial restitution were ordered to be made by them in every case this might give parents a more serious view on control over their children.” A remit to this effect was carried. It was reported that deserted wives who applied for social security benefits often had to wait for six weeks whilst the application was considered in Wellington. A remit asking that such applications should be dealt with in the office in which they are lodged was carried.
Mrs W. K. Cameron presided and welcomed new delegates to the council. The secretary, Miss F. E. Wood said that 40 cases of food had been sent to Britain last week.
