GERMAN ARTISTS
Reproductions Of Famous Works ON VIEW IN DUNEDIN The spread of the Reformation inspired by Martin Luther and his followers in the 15th century had an important influence in shaping the work of individual German artists and in determining the trend of art in that country generally. This is emphasised in the magnificent reproductiohs of German artists which are on view at the Art Gallery, these being on loan from the National Art Gallery, Wellington. The two main centres of early pictorial art in Germany were Prague and Cologne. Amongst the artists who will attract immediate attention is Albrecht Durer, a master of line drawing. His famous self portrait is there, with its expression of sweet and melancholy gravity. The Madonna in a Landscape, is beautifully drawn, and it so' thoroughly worked out that it has almost the completeness of a painting. .>• • Hans Holbein is well represented with some of his most- notable portraits, including the incomparable, Christine of Denmark, Ann of Cleves, and Sir Robert Southwell, the latter an excellent example of \ Holbein’s, incisive drawing. Students of art will find plenty to; interest them in the reproductions- of, the works of Mattheus Grunewald, : Schongauer, Lucas Cranach, Hals] Baldung Grun, and. Behan. V ( . ;
