HE HAD HEARD THAT ONE BEFORE!
NZPA Special Correspondent Rec. 7.20 p.m. LONDON, May 17. One of the hundreds of New Zealanders now arriving in London for the summer season was recently offered one of the fountains in Trafalgar Square to take home as a souvenir. According to the Daily Mail he was Mr John McNamara, of Wellington, I was admiring the fountains,” he is reported to have said, “ when a middle-aged man, quite well dressed, engaged me in conversation. When he learned I was a colonial he told me the fountains were being dismantled and were for sale. I had heard the story of the man who ‘ sold ’ the Sydney bridge. So I roared with laughter and the confidence trickster had the decency to run away.”
