CONTINENTAL YESTERDAYS

Sweet and Sour. By Joseph Wechsberg. Michael Joseph, Ltd,, 10s 6d. Those who read and enjoyed Joseph Wechsberg’s autobiography, “Looking for a Bluebird,” will find more of the same fare in his Sweet and Sour, in which the well-known writer-musician tells the story of his younger days. It is a clear picture of Czechoslovakia in an interesting period in the history of that country—the time of the first republic. The dominant theme of the author's youth was music, and much of the volume concerns his own experiences as an orchestra member and leader. All his reminiscences are in a good-humoured, often racy, style, and both the seeker after information and reader who asks no more than good entertainment, must be well satisfied.
