POWER SAVED
Dunedin Area New Restrictions And Quota In Force Dunedin saved electricity on Thursday, when the demand in the area was 1.92 per cent, under the quota. The new restrictions imposed by the Dunedin Power Restrictions Advisory Committee on Tuesday came, into force on Thursday; so did the new quota, fixed by the electricity controller, Mr A. E. Davenport, of Wellington. This new quota represents a cut of 12£ per cent, on the previous allocation and a cut of 221 per cent, on what would be the normal demand. In spite of the saving on Thursday, however, Dunedin exceeded its allocation for the four days this week by 2.86 per cent. , The level of Lake Mahinerangi stood at 84ft 4in yesterday morning—a fall of 2in in 24 hours. All radio stations throughout New Zealand Will go off the air, at 10.30 p.m. each day, beginning on Monday, as part of the national power-saving effort. This means that the last news broadcast will be at 9 p.m. Church heating on Sunday morning was a subject discussed with the Daily Times by an official of the City Electricity Department yesterday. The restrictions stipulate that electric heaters must be switched off between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. each day, including Saturday and Sunday. In reply to an inquiry, the officer stated that where churches had no other form of heating for morning services on Sunday they would be allowed to use electric heating. This concession was made to churches without any other form of heating because of the fact that the churches did not use this heating throughout the week and the time it would be ’ used was in an off-peak period.
