NEWS OF THE DAY
Coughs And Colds As well as being the season for Rugby football and shooting, winter is the time for coughs and colds. According to a Dunedin chemist, the season got away to a good start last month, and on present indications the prospects are encouraging. In spite of the showers yesterday, however, there was no undue demand for cold cures, although some pharmacists in the city reported increased sales. Except for a glandular throat trouble which was prevalent at present, the position was normal for this time of the year, a chemist told the Daily Times, but next month, when winter had really set in, an increase in the number of citizens afflicted with coughs, colds, sore throats and bronchitis could be expected. City Water Supply A further loss of 1.370.000 gallons in the 24 hours ended at 8 a.m. yesterday brought the total water storage in the Dunedin reservoirs down to 107,231,000 gallons. The demand in the past few days has averaged 7,500,000 gallons. There was 0.12 in of rain at Ross Creek on Thursday and O.OOin at Sullivan’s dam. Capping Proceeds Student officials expressed some doubt to the Daily Times last evening that the public was fully aware of the destination of the proceeds of Capping functions. They wished to make it clear that the collection, held in conjunction with the procession, was allocated to the Tuberculosis Association, and that other revenues were kept to defray production expenses of the concert and other functions.
Income Tax Returns Business people, farmers and wageearners who earned more than £2OO during the year ended March 31 have less than a month in which to furnish their income tax returns. Forms for the purpose are now availahle at post offices, and must be returned to the superintendent of the branch office of the Land and Income Tax Department, where the taxpayer’s returns are filed, not later than June 1. The time allowed for furnishing returns may be extended in special cases on application to the department, but a fine of not more than £IOO and not less than £2 may be imposed on a person convicted of not furnishing a return. The social security declaration is not due until July 1, and a month is allowed in which to pay the charge. Shooting Season
Sportsmen in the coastal areas will probably be more fortunate than those in Central Otago when the shooting season for water fowl, quail and chukor opens today. Reports received by the Otago Acclimatisation Society indicate that at the Green Island swamp. Waihola, Waipori and Kaitangata there are good prospects for ducks and swans. Some inland areas are very dry, especially Patearoa and Moa Creek, but reports from Lauder Valley, Ida Valley, Tapanui and Kelso are good. The Shag River has been low, and ducks are not expected to be plentiful there. The Acclimatisation Society has asked shooters to help to Erotect five white swans which have een living in the Green Island swamp.
