EASTER HOLIDAY

Travel Arrangements SPORTS AND SHOPPING Although the weather yesterday suggested an Easter preference for central heating rather than canvas, there are sure to be camping parties and caravans on the road tonight as people take advantage of the holiday break before winter. Less hardy folk will elect to spend the holidays in the comfort of hotels or with friends, and transport and accommodation to and at the popular resorts are well booked. Additional expresses are being run to cope with the holiday traffic, and there will be other special trains for race meetings. For those who prefer to have Easter at home, there are several sporting attractions reasonably near at hand. The Otago lawn tennis championships will be played at Logan Park, and the golf championships at Balmacewen. The Otago Centre’s Easter tournament will keep bowlers occupied.

The nearest meeting for racegoers will be at Beaumont, on Saturday and Monday, but others may range further afield to Riccarton and Addington, or to the Riverton Racing Club’s threeday meeting, which opens the steeplechasing season. With the prospect of encounters with the British touring team, the Rugby season is under way early, and matches will be played at Carisbrook on Saturday between Kaikorai and Pirates (Invercargill) an,d Union and Linwood (Christchurch). Other city clubs —Dunedin, Pirates and Southern —have arranged out-of-town matches. As Rugby starts, cricketers wind up their season, and there will be a belated tour by teams from the NorthEast Valley and Old Boys’ Clubs in Central Otago. For those who plan to travel, the Railways Department has made provision for several special expresses. There will be three to Christchurch and Invercargill today, and next Tuesday there will be two special trains in each direction. Normal services, with the exception of the late night through express and the addition of an extra express to Gore in the morning, will be run tomorrow. A special through express will be run to Christchurch on Monday night, together with an extra train to Gore in the morning and another to Invercargill in the afternoon. Expresses will also run to Cromwell today and on Tuesday, and there will be special trains to and from Cromwell late tonight. Special trains will be run to Beaumont on Saturday and Monday. Motorists who go into Central Otago will find the roads in good condition for the most part, although care should be taken on the newlymetalled portion between Lawrence and Beaumont. The bridges have now been replaced on the Cardrona road, so that the Crown Range will again be open for a short time before the customary winter closing. . Those people who have no special plans for Easter have not been forgotten by the city advertisers Gardeners have been exhorted to take advantage of the good opportunity for planting, but in most families it will be the man of the house who makes plant purchases —wives will be too busy today coping with the family catering needs. For butchers, bakers and other suppliers of food staples today will be much more pleasant _in retrospect for a hectic rush of buying is anticipated.
