EXCLUSION OF TROTS
Racing Clubs Permitted To Take Action It is reported that the Racing Conference has circularised racing clubs intimating that any club which has included trotting events in its programmes and now wishes to exclude any or all of them is at liberty to do so, provided that such action is taken during the current or next season. In the event of any club deleting one or both trotting races it will not be granted permission to reinstate them at a later date. Unless such action is taken during the balance of the current season, or in the ensuing season, it will be concluded that the trots are to remain on the programmes. , One of the first clubs to make a change is the Southland Racing Club, which has dropped the trotting events from the programme for its winter meeting, having substituted a steeplechase on the first day and an open handicap event on the second dav. It is expected that other clubs in Otago and Southland will take similar action. Some of the smaller clubs, however, will probably retain them, as they have proved very popular with punters, and, in some cases, the turnover on the trotting races has been greater than for any single galloping event at the meeting. Some of the struggling clubs would be hard pressed to show a profit if it were not for these events.
