FOR FORBURY PARK
Precaution Will Create Interest Precaution is an interesting nomination for the slower class trotters r race at the Forbury Park meeting on April 22 and April 29. The Canova colt won several small races in Australia during ( the In-ter-Dominion championships and in his first start since then, in the New Zealand Trotting Stakes on Saturday at Addington he was never a possibility after breaking at the start. He broke his overcheck just before the start and his trainer-driver, A. Holmes, had to tie it back and this may have been the cause of him breaking. He is usually very reliable. He is out of a grand trotting mare in Margin, winner of the Century Free-for-all at Forbury Park when she was 14 years old. Precaution can be expected to make a bold showing if he is brought to Forbury Park and his appearance should be one of the features of the meeting. Greymouth Prospect
Calamity Jane, who ran a good third in the New Zeala, j Trotting Stakes on Saturday, should come into ner own in the straight-out trotters’ races at Greymouth next Monday. Trained by C. R. Berkett, she should prove too classy for her older opponents off the front mark. Solid Effort
Laureldale recorded a good performance for a three-year-old when he won the Taranaki Trotting Club jubilee Handicap on Saturday. It was his second twomfie success on end and he gives promise of developing good staying form in stronger company than he beat at New Plymouth. By the New Zealand Cup winner, Josedale Grattan, he is out of Laureline, a mare not in the Stud Book. He is trained at Hamilton by J. E. Smith.
Should Race Well Islaburn Lass should make an improved showing in the Members’ Handicap at Addington on Saturday. She was unplaced in the Plains Handicap, won by her stablemate, Vedette, last week. One of the best all-round horses sent from Southland for many years, Islaburn Lass looks nicely placed off the front mark, and if she races up to her best form she should hold too many guns, for her opponents over the last bit.
Speedy But Erratic Happy Joe won his third race for the season when he was successful in the Glenham Handicap at Wyndham on Saturday at long odds. The Colossal gelding has more than average speed, but he usually falls to make a smooth beginning. If he could be relied on he would go on to a tight mark, but unless he mends his ways he is unlikely to go far. He is trained at Winton by J. T. Looney. Unreliable Proposition
If Scott Wrack could be relied on to leave the mark correctly he would be returned a winner in the near future. He wrecked his chances in both his races on the first two days at Addington, but in each of them he showed outstanding speed to be handy to the leaders at the post. Now trained by G. S. Smith, he ranks as a full-brother to another speedy but erratic pacer in Democrat. Scott Wrack is engaged in the Wilkin Handicap at Addington this week and if he leaves the mark he would have bright prospects off the front. Well-earned Success
Few horses have been racing more consistently than Perpetua this season and her win in the Papanui Handicap at Addington last week was well merited. She has now had two wins and six placings in her eight starts this season. Perpetua was one of the best three-year-old fillies seen out last season and she looks as though she will live up to her early promise with a bit of age. She is not engaged at Addington this week and she will probably have her next outing at the Forbury Park winter meeting later this month, where she has been entered for the intermediate sprint races.
