“UP IN SMOKE”

Stone Over Breakwater

Referring to an item in the harbour master's works report to the monthly meeting of the Oamaru Harbour Board, that 456 tons of stone had been deposited on the breakwater to date, Mr E. S_ Svmon said he was of the opinion that the type of stone being deposited was not suitable. It was too small, he said, and it was “just going up in smoke. The harbour master was of the same opinion, but he had dumped the largest stone available over the breakwater onl.v as an expedient, the chairman. Mr A. McMillan, said. The harbour master thought this would help to eliminate further damage to the breakwater until such time as the larger stone was available. Mr McMillan said he shared Mr Symon s opinion. , , Mr Symon: It is only a waste of time and money to do this. Mr McMillan: I do not agree witn you. It is an expedient until the shot is fired. Mr Symon: I still maintain it is a waste of time and money. It should be stopped until we obtain larger stone. There was not the large stone available to dump over the breakwater. Mr C. J. Dugdale said. The harbour master was dumping the smaller stone to saleguard the damaged portion.
