Something of a trap for unwary motorists .is set by the “Black Bridge” on the North Taieri road, close to the Whare Flat turn-off. Like many bridges in the country which were built under the departmental ruling that all such structures should be set at right-angles to the stream they crossed, the Black bridge has poor approaches, particularly from the city side. The hazard for drivers of small cars,

however, is the longitudinal decking. The twin wheel tracks are higher than the bridge decking and small cars which are not manoeuvred accurately on to the tracks could easily be thrown against the side railings. Suggestions have been made that in view of the increased'traffic on this highway, which also serves the Air Force station, improvements should be carried out to this bridge. )
