Tasmanian House Of Assembly Is To Be Dissolved

NZP A—Copyright Rec. 11 p.m. HOBART. Mar. 22. The State Governor, Sir Hugh Binney, has granted the request by the Labour Premier, Mr R. Cosgrove, for the dissolution of Tasmania’s House of Assembly. Sir Hugh Binney made the decision after the Liberal Opposition leader, Mr R. C. Townley, had informed him that he was unable to secure sufficient support for a stable Government. The date of the election has yet to be decided. There is no record in Tasmanian history of the Government having sought its dissolution while Parliament has been in recess, and the Government has not suffered defeat on a major issue. In the Tasmanian .State elections on November 23, Labour won 16 seats, the Liberals 12, and Independents 2. In the 1941’ elections the composition of the House was: Labour 20. Liberals 10.
