STRONG POSITION

OTAGO BOYS’ HIGH SCHOOL

CRICKET AT LITTLEBOURNE Mainly through an excellent knock of 155 by the vice-captain, G. M. Aim, Otago Boys' High School was in a strong position at the close of the first days play in the annual cricket match against Timaru Boys’ High School. The Littlebourne wicket was in excellent order, but the Timaru captain, thinking it earned too much dew, put Otago in to bat. The home side made the most of its opportunity, and after 255 minutes had put on 289 runs. Timaru, in reply, had lost five wickets for 107 runs at stumps. Aim’s innings was the, feature of the day’s play, his total including 24 4 s and three 6’s It was not an entirely chanceless knock, but his flashing cover drives and occasional hook shot left l'ttle to be desired. The captain, W. R. Cullen, also made an attractive 43 before being given out leg before, but D. Batten, who scored 56, was perhaps a little cautious considering the good start the side had There was a fairly long “ tail ” in the home team’s batting, and the Timaiu bowlers received some compensation for their trying morning. The medium-paced opener, J. Pine, kept at his task and thoroushly deserved his three wickets. The rest of the wickets were fairly evenly shared. The Timaru captain, D. Miller gave a sound display behind the stumps, allowing no byes in the large total and taking two catches. With 100 minutes to bat, Timaru started off badly, two wickets being down for 19 runs. M. Jack, who was undefeated at stumps with a well-made 62, assisted bv Miller and R. S. Morris, made a stand, however, and the total was more respectable when stumps were drawn. The match will conclude today. Scores: — Otago Boys’ High School First Innings G. M. Aim. b Morris 155 A. Clark, b Pine .. .. .. W. R.-Cullen, Ibw, b Jack 43 D. Batten, c Vesty, b Williams ~ .. 5b R.
