Many Deputations VISIT OF MINISTER Road And Rail Problems The Minister of Works and Railways, Mr Goosman, who arrived in the city yesterday afternoon, will have a particularly heavy day today hearing representations from deputations, which will commence at 9 a.m. and continue until 7.30 in the evening. The first deputation will be from the Mosgiel Eorough Council, which will make representations regarding rail facilities and improvements to the services between Port Chalmers and Mosgiel, and concerning bus fares between Mosgiel and the city. The borough also will discuss with the Minister the Government’s housing programme for the district. A£ the present time the programme of development provides for the building of 80 houses. The deputation wants to ascertain what will be the position when these houses are built, and if a further expansion is possible. The Taieri County Council is to take a deputation to the Minister to discuss with him the desirability of renewing the Deep Stream bridge, a subject which it opened up with the Highways Board during its last visit to Dunedin. It will also ask for further financial assistance in the work of improving the Middlemarch road, and will bring to the notice of the Minister the condition of the road and bridge on what is known as the Wingatui deviation. The St. Clair Women’s Club is also td meet the Minister to discuss the question of a permit for a new clubrooms for the district. The Otago Expansion League is* to make representations to the Minister regarding the completion of the Haast Pass road, the electrification of railways, and the building of the Sawyers’ Bay tunnel to Waitati in relation to electrification. The Dunedin City Council will also send a deputation to the Minister. In the evening the Minister will meet a deputation from the Green Island Borough Council at his hotel, the main matters concerning the borough being the Short street deviation from just below Lookout Point and over which, it is claimed, the bulk of the Main South road traffic now flows. Other matters deal with the Abbotsford and North Taieri roads in the borough. The Otago Development Council will bring under the notice of the Minister questions relating to housing and general industrial expansion and also other matters that were discussed at the meeting held last week between the council and county authorities. The Wakari Community Centre will ask that the Ministry of Works should provide bulldozers and other assistance in the levelling of the recreation area in the district. Until the levelling is done it is impossible to play football and other games on the area. The need for a new post office and improvements to the Kensington railwav station will be brought under the Minister’s notice by a deputation from the South Dunedin Business Men’s Association. These matters have been under discussion previously with the two members of Parliament concerned, Mr Jones and Mr Hudson. There will also be a deputation from the Otago Retail Fishmongers’ Association.
